It’s All About the Love!

Opening Prayer:

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we gather in Your holy presence this day with hearts full of expectation and hope. As we light the fourth candle of Advent, we are reminded of the love You poured out to the world through the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Open our hearts and minds to Your Word today. May we be filled with the light of Your love and share it with others. Bless this time together, and may Your Spirit guide us as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Introduction:

Brothers and sisters, we have journeyed through the Advent season together, lighting the candles of hope, peace, and joy. Today, we come to the fourth candle—the candle of love. As we draw nearer to Christmas, we are reminded of the profound love God has for each of us, a love that was made manifest in the birth of Jesus Christ.

Our Scripture focus today comes from 1 John 4:9-11:

"This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."

Let us unpack this Scripture and reflect on the power and purpose of God’s love in our lives.

1. The Source of Love

Brothers and sisters, the first thing we see in this passage is that love originates from God. It is not merely an emotion or a fleeting feeling; it is the very essence of who God is. John reminds us that God demonstrated His love by sending His only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. This act of love was sacrificial, intentional, and transformative.

During Advent, as we prepare for Christmas, let us reflect on the depth of this love. Imagine a God so vast and holy choosing to enter into our broken world—not as a king in splendor, but as a vulnerable baby born in a manger. This is the humility of divine love.

2. Love in Action

True love, brothers and sisters, is not passive. It requires action. In verse 10, John tells us that God’s love was not contingent on our worthiness or effort. “Not that we loved God, but that He loved us.” While we were still sinners, Christ came for us (Romans 5:8).

God’s love moves beyond words to deeds. It’s a love that reaches out to the marginalized, heals the brokenhearted, and restores the weary. As followers of Christ, we are called to embody this same active love in our daily lives. How are we showing God’s love to our neighbors, family, and even strangers? Are we willing to love as Christ loves—without condition or expectation of return?

3. The Call to Love One Another

John’s words challenge us: “Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” Brothers and sisters, this is where our faith becomes visible. The world will know we are Christ’s disciples by our love (John 13:35).

This season, let’s move beyond the surface of Christmas traditions and truly reflect the love of Christ. Perhaps it’s a kind word to someone struggling, a helping hand to a neighbor in need, or forgiveness to someone who has wronged us. These acts of love, however small, can shine the light of Christ into the darkest corners.

4. Love as the Foundation of Christmas

At its heart, Christmas is a love story. It’s about God’s relentless pursuit of humanity and His desire to bring us into relationship with Him. The manger in Bethlehem points to the cross at Calvary, where the ultimate act of love was displayed.

As we light the candle of love today, let us remember that Advent is not just a time of waiting but also a time of preparing our hearts to receive and reflect God’s love. How can we make room for this love in our busy lives? How can we share it with others?

Closing Challenge:

Brothers and sisters, as we enter this final week of Advent, I encourage you to pause and meditate on the love of God. Let it transform your heart and guide your actions. Let it inspire you to be a beacon of hope, peace, joy, and love in a world that desperately needs it.

Closing Prayer:

Let us pray. Lord of love, thank You for reminding us today of the immeasurable gift of Your love. As we go forth from this place, help us to carry this love into our homes, workplaces, and communities. May we be Your hands and feet, spreading the light of Christ in all we do. Bless our Advent journey and prepare our hearts for the celebration of Your Son’s birth. We pray this in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
