On Fire for Christ: Living with Passion and Purpose

Opening Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with open hearts, eager to hear Your Word and be transformed by Your Spirit. Ignite in us a fire that cannot be extinguished, a passion for Your glory and Your kingdom. May Your Word inspire us to live with zeal and devotion to Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. In His name we pray, Amen.

Introduction: Good morning, brothers and sisters! Last week I spoke on what it meant to be lukewarm, today, I want to talk about a phrase that we hear often in Christian circles: "on fire for Christ." It’s a powerful image, one that conjures up ideas of passion, zeal, and uncontainable enthusiasm. But what does it really mean to be "on fire for Christ"? Is it an emotional high? A temporary feeling? Or is it something deeper, something that can transform our lives in lasting ways?

In our time together today, we’ll explore what it means to truly be on fire for Christ, how we can live with that kind of fervor, and why it’s so essential for our walk with God.

I. The Meaning of "On Fire for Christ"

1. A Biblical Understanding of Zeal: When we speak of being "on fire for Christ," brothers and sisters we are really talking about zeal — a passionate, eager desire to serve God and spread His gospel. The Bible is full of examples of people who were on fire for the Lord. Consider the Apostle Paul, who says in Romans 12:11:

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord."

Zeal is more than just enthusiasm. It is a committed, persistent energy that directs our lives toward God’s purposes. It's a consuming passion that doesn’t fade with the seasons but grows deeper as we mature in our faith.

2. Jesus Himself Was "On Fire:" Jesus is our ultimate example of what it means to be on fire for God. His passion for the Father and His mission were evident in every moment of His life. We see this in His words from John 2:17:

"Zeal for Your house will consume me."

Jesus' life was driven by an intense passion for the will of God — a passion that led Him to give His very life for us. If we are to be on fire for Christ, we must look to Him as the ultimate example of zealous love for God and for the world.

3. Being on Fire Is About a Deep Relationship with Christ: To be on fire for Christ isn’t about hype or emotionalism brothers and sisters, though emotions can certainly be a part of it. At its core, it’s about being deeply connected to Jesus. In John 15:5, Jesus says:

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

This deep, intimate relationship with Christ is the source of our zeal. It’s not something we work up in ourselves; it’s something that flows out of a vibrant connection to the living Christ.

II. How to Be On Fire for Christ

1. Seek First the Kingdom of God: One of the best ways to stoke the fire of zeal is by seeking God’s kingdom first. Matthew 6:33 says:

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

When we make God our top priority, when we align our hearts and our lives with His purposes, we can’t help but catch the fire of His mission. This means putting God above all else in our daily decisions, our goals, and our relationships. It’s a commitment to make Him the center of everything brothers and sisters, He deserves to be the center of our lives.

2. Spend Time in Prayer and the Word: Another way to stay on fire for Christ is by nourishing our souls with the Word of God and spending time in prayer. Jeremiah 20:9 speaks of God’s Word as a fire:

"But if I say, 'I will not mention His word or speak anymore in His name,' His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot."

Now brothers and sisters The Word of God has the power to ignite our hearts with passion. When we are in the Word, and when we pray earnestly, we are continuously drawing near to God, and He fans the flames of zeal in our hearts.

3. Live with a Sense of Urgency: Being on fire for Christ means living with a sense of urgency. The apostle Paul, in Romans 13:11-12, reminds us of the time-sensitive nature of our mission:

"The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here."

Zeal brothers and sisters, The fire of zeal grows when we are mindful of the urgency of the gospel. Our time on earth is short, and every day is an opportunity to serve the Lord and reach others with His love. The more we understand the brevity of life, the more passionate we become about the work we’re called to do.

4. Serve Others in Love: Zeal for Christ is always expressed in love for others. Jesus’ passion for God led Him to lay down His life for the world. In the same way, our zeal for Christ should compel us to serve and love others sacrificially. In Galatians 5:13-14, Paul writes:

"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

True zeal isn’t self-centered. It is driven by a heart that wants to see others come to know Christ and experience His beautiful glory, blessings, grace, and mercy.

III. Cultivating the Fire: How to Stay on Fire for Christ

Now that we understand what it means to be on fire for Christ, the question is: How can we cultivate and sustain this passion? Here are a few practical ways to keep the fire burning:

1. Stay close to God through prayer and His Word: The fire of the Holy Spirit is fueled by our relationship with God. Spending time in prayer and meditating on God’s Word are essential for staying on fire for Christ. These disciplines strengthen our faith, deepen our love for God, and renew our zeal.

2. Surround yourself with fellow believers: Iron sharpens iron, and so we need to be in community with other believers who are also passionate about Christ. Fellowship encourages us, holds us accountable, and helps us grow in our faith. Don’t neglect gathering together with other Christians.

3. Serve with joy: Brothers and sisters when we serve others in the name of Christ, our passion for Him grows. Look for opportunities to serve in your church, your community, and beyond. As we pour ourselves out for others, the fire of God’s love burns brighter within us.

4. Live with a sense of urgency: Our time on earth is short, and the mission of Christ is urgent. Being on fire for Christ means living with a sense of purpose and urgency, knowing that we are called to spread the gospel and make disciples.

IV. Conclusion: A Call to Rekindle the Fire

Brothers and sisters as we close, I want to issue a challenge to each of you: Ask yourself, “Am I on fire for Christ?” If you feel your passion has dimmed, don’t despair. God is always ready to rekindle the flame. Just as the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, so to can we be filled again with the Spirit’s power to live with zeal and passion for Christ.

Let us pray brothers and sisters that God would ignite our hearts, set us ablaze with His love, and empower us to live as His faithful witnesses in the world.

Closing Prayer:

Father, we thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit who ignites our hearts and empowers us to live for You. We ask that You would rekindle the fire in each of us, that we might be passionate about Your glory and Your kingdom. Help us to live with zeal and fervor, serving You and others with joy. May our lives reflect the love and power of Christ, and may we be a light to those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Benediction:

Go forth today with the fire of the Holy Spirit in your hearts, living boldly and passionately for Christ. May His presence fill you and His love compel you to serve Him and others with all your heart. Amen.
