Opening Prayer
Let us bow our heads in prayer.
Heavenly Father, we come before You today with hearts full of gratitude and expectation as we enter this holy season of Advent. Thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who came to be the light of the world and our eternal hope. Open our hearts and minds to receive Your Word today. May it inspire us, strengthen us, and draw us closer to You. Bless our time together and let Your Spirit move among us. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, The Advent season is a time of anticipation and preparation, a time when we reflect on the coming of our Lord and Savior. Today, on the third day of Advent, we light the pink candle of Gaudete, or Rejoicing. This candle reminds us of the joy that comes with the nearness of Christ.
Our theme today is Rejoice in the Lord, for He is Near. As we meditate on this message, we will explore the source of our joy, the challenges to our joy, and how we can live joyfully in anticipation of Christ’s return.
Scripture Reading
Our scripture today comes from Philippians 4:4-7:
"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
1. The Source of Our Joy
Brothers and sisters, what is the source of true joy? The world tells us joy comes from success, wealth, or comfort. But Paul’s words in Philippians remind us that our joy is rooted in the Lord.
Rejoicing always does not mean ignoring life’s difficulties. It means remembering that our joy is not dependent on our circumstances. Our joy comes from knowing Jesus. He is Emmanuel—God with us. This truth is especially meaningful in Advent as we prepare to celebrate His birth and look forward to His return.
Consider the shepherds in Luke 2:10-11. The angel declared to them:
"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord."
This same Savior is the source of our unshakable joy.
2. Challenges to Our Joy
Let’s be honest, brothers and sisters, life often challenges our joy. We face struggles—health issues, financial burdens, broken relationships, and a world filled with conflict. How can we rejoice when life feels overwhelming?
Paul gives us the answer:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
Anxiety is the thief of joy, but prayer is its defender. When we bring our concerns to God, we exchange our burdens for His peace. This peace, Paul says, "transcends all understanding."
Remember, the Lord is near. He is with us in our struggles, walking beside us, and carrying us when we are weak.
3. Living Joyfully in Anticipation
Brothers and sisters, rejoicing in the Lord is not a passive command; it calls us to action. How do we live out this joy?
Through Gratitude
Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have in Christ. Make it a daily practice to thank God for His blessings, big and small.
Through Service
Joy grows when we share it with others. Serve those in need, encourage the weary, and be a light to those in darkness.
Through Worship
In worship, we declare the goodness of God and are reminded of His promises. Let us come together in worship, especially during this Advent season, to celebrate the hope and joy we have in Christ.
Finally, as we light the third candle of Advent, let it remind us that our waiting is not in vain. Jesus is coming again, and His return will bring eternal joy.
Conclusion
Brothers and sisters, as we leave here today, let us carry the light of joy into the world. Let us live as people who know the truth of Philippians 4:4-7:
"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! The Lord is near."
Closing Prayer
Let us pray.
Lord, we thank You for the gift of Your Word, which reminds us to rejoice in all circumstances because You are near. Fill our hearts with the joy that comes from knowing You. Help us to trust You in our anxieties and to live with gratitude, service, and worship. As we go into the world this week, may our lives reflect the light of Your joy to those around us. Keep us faithful as we await the celebration of Your birth and the hope of Your return. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
May the joy of the Lord be your strength this Advent season. Go in peace and serve the Lord.
