The Cost and Call of Discipleship

Father God,We come before You today not in our strength, but in our weakness. We need Your Spirit to breathe life into our tired bones, to awaken our hearts, and to stir our souls. Lord, speak to us—not just to inform us, but to transform us. Let the lukewarm be stirred, the weary be refreshed, and the faithful be ignited anew. Let us leave here not just hearers, but doers of Your Word.In the mighty name of Jesus,Amen.

Brothers and Sisters,

This message is for all of us—whether you are fervent in your walk with Christ or you've grown cold in the shadows of routine religion.

We are living in a time where true discipleship is rare and convenient Christianity is common. But Jesus is not calling us to convenience—He’s calling us to the cross.

The Seriousness of the Call: Discipleship Is for All Believers

Matthew 28:18–20 — “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

This was Jesus’ final command before He ascended. And yet for many, it's treated like an optional mission trip rather than a daily life directive.

Jesus didn't say "make disciples if you're a pastor," or "make disciples once you're mature enough."

No, every follower of Christ is called to be a disciple and make disciples.

Romans 12:1-2 tells us to “present our bodies as a living sacrifice… not conformed to this world.”

That is discipleship—it’s living for Jesus daily and helping others do the same.

A Warning to the Lukewarm

Now, Brothers and sisters, let me speak plainly:

Many Christians are content to attend church, sing songs, and walk out unchanged. They are lukewarm, and the Bible has a strong word for that.

Revelation 3:15–16 — “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot… because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

This is Jesus speaking—not to atheists, not to pagans—but to church people.

Lukewarmness is spiritual laziness disguised as faith. It’s believing in Jesus but not following Him.

It’s quoting Scripture but not living it. It’s going to church but not being the Church.

God is not impressed by partial devotion.

He’s calling you—not just to believe in Him—but to surrender your whole life to Him.

The Cost of Discipleship: Dying to Self

Luke 9:23-24 — “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Discipleship is not a path of comfort—it’s a path of the cross.

It means dying to your will, your comfort, and your pride.

It means living a life that says, "Not my will, but Yours be done."

Jesus didn’t sugarcoat the cost. He said:

Luke 14:27 — “Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

That’s clear. It’s not a suggestion. It's not a footnote.

It is the standard of true Christian living.

The Fruit of a Disciple: Abiding and Multiplying

John 15:5-8 — “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit… This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

Real disciples bear fruit—fruit of character and conversion.

Character: The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23)

Conversion: Helping others come to faith and grow in it (Matthew 4:19)

2 Timothy 2:2 — Paul tells Timothy: “What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”

That’s generational discipleship.

We don’t just grow—we reproduce.

We don’t just learn—we teach.

We don’t just receive—we give.

The Urgency of the Mission: Time is Short

Ephesians 5:15–16 — “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

Look at the world around us.

Darkness is increasing.

Truth is under attack.

Souls are perishing.

If ever there was a time to stop being passive—it is now.

Brothers and sisters—if you are a serious Christian, now is the time to go deeper. If you are lukewarm, now is the time to repent and return to your first love (Revelation 2:4-5).

God is raising up disciples—not fans. Not spectators. Soldiers. Servants. Shepherds.

Conclusion: Who Will Answer the Call?

Jesus is calling. Not for part-time followers, but for full-time disciples.

Not for comfortable Christians, but for committed ones.

Whether you’ve been walking with Him faithfully or you’ve drifted into lukewarm waters—today is the day to recommit.

Joshua 24:15 — “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…”

Will you follow Jesus with all your heart?

Will you deny yourself and carry your cross?

Will you disciple others as Christ commanded?

Lord Jesus,

You see every heart here. You see the faithful and the faltering, the hungry and the hesitant.

Forgive us, Lord, for when we’ve made our faith about convenience. Forgive us for our lukewarmness. Stir us again with holy fire.

Teach us what it means to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow You.

Empower us by Your Spirit to live as true disciples—and to make disciples wherever You send us.

Let our lives glorify You and advance Your kingdom.

And may we one day hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen.
