Good morning, brothers and sisters. It is a blessing to be here with you today as we gather to reflect on a topic that is both timely and crucial for our lives as followers of Christ. Today, we’re going to talk about lukewarm Christianity and why we must strive to be real Christians.
This is not a topic meant to condemn, but rather to awaken us, to encourage us, and to challenge us. My prayer is that by the end of this sermon, we would all have a renewed passion and commitment to follow Jesus Christ with our whole hearts.
Let’s open our bibles together where we’ll start by reading from Revelation 3:15-16:
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth."
In these verses, brothers and sisters, Jesus is addressing the church in Laodicea. The message to them is blunt and severe. This church thought they were fine, but Jesus saw them differently. He said they were neither cold nor hot but lukewarm—and that made Him sick to His stomach.
This passage is not just a historical account. It's a warning for the church today. And it raises the question: Are we living as lukewarm Christians?
First and foremost, What is Lukewarm Christianity?
To understand what it means to be lukewarm, we first need to look at what "hot" and "cold" are in this passage.
Hot Christianity brothers and sisters, Is the passionate, on-fire believer. Hot water has energy, it’s used for cleansing, healing, and transforming. In the same way, a hot Christian is fully committed to Christ, zealous for His glory, and actively living out their faith.
Cold Christianity or being "cold" isn't necessarily a bad thing. Cold water can refresh and revive us, just like someone who is not pretending to be a Christian, but it is open to hearing the gospel. Cold hearts may be distant from God, but they’re not deceiving themselves into thinking they’re fine when they’re not.
Lukewarm Christianity is the most dangerous state a Christian can be in because it’s the hardest to recognize. It’s being in a state of spiritual indifference. A lukewarm Christian is someone who says they believe in Jesus but shows little passion or commitment to Him. They are comfortable in their faith, but not deeply convicted. They don’t live radically different from the world, and their relationship with God is more about routine than relationship.
Jesus tells the Laodicean church that they are lukewarm, and because of that, He is about to "spit them out"— a strong and vivid metaphor showing His disgust brothers and sisters.
The Characteristics of Lukewarm Christianity:
They live a life of Complacency: Lukewarm Christians are content with just enough faith to feel good about themselves, but not enough to challenge them.
They are of this world they aren’t living for the next: Lukewarm Christians look like the world around them. Their values, priorities, and actions don't reflect the radical transformation Jesus calls us to.
They have Half-hearted commitment and conviction: Lukewarm Christians serve God when it's convenient but don’t make sacrifices. They attend church when it’s comfortable but don't let the gospel change their lives.
And finally, they have False security: Lukewarm Christians often feel spiritually secure, thinking they're okay because they call themselves Christians, but their faith doesn’t make a real impact in their lives or the lives of others.
The Dangers of Lukewarm Christianity:
They are Lacking Spiritual Power; Lukewarm Christianity leads to a powerless faith. When we become complacent, our relationship with God becomes a mere formality, and we stop experiencing the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. We no longer pray with passion, we no longer desire to be conformed to Christ’s image, and we no longer yearn to see God’s kingdom advance.
They are a Hindrance to Evangelism brothers and sisters. The world is looking for something real. A lukewarm Christian doesn't show the world the radical love, joy, and peace of a genuine relationship with Christ. When we aren't living passionately for Jesus, we fail to be effective witnesses to those who need Him.
They are Spiritually Blind, as we saw in the Laodicean church, they didn’t even realize they were lukewarm. Jesus said to them, “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked” This goes back to our reading in Revelation chapter 3 verse 17. Lukewarm Christians often deceive themselves into thinking they are spiritually healthy when, in fact, they are spiritually impoverished.
Brothers and sisters they are Separated from God, The worst danger of lukewarmness is that it distances us from God. Jesus doesn't just want us to go through the motions; He wants our hearts. Lukewarmness robs us of intimacy with Him. Jesus desires a deep, personal relationship with each of us, not a surface-level connection.
Why We Should Strive to Be Real Christians!
Because God Deserves Our Whole Heart, Jesus didn’t die on the cross so we could be half-hearted in our devotion to Him. He gave His all for us; how can we give less than our best for Him? Jesus calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:37). That means we can’t be content with a mediocre faith, there has to be more to it, to our lives, to our devotion, to our very soul brothers and sisters.
Because of the Glory of God, A passionate, sold-out faith brings glory to God. When we live for Him with everything we have, we become vessels through which He reveals His power, grace, and glory to the world. Our lives become a testimony of His goodness.
We Need His Power, Lukewarm Christianity robs us of the power of the Holy Spirit. The power to overcome sin, to endure trials, to live in victory, and to witness to others, it comes when we live authentically and wholeheartedly for God. When we surrender fully to Him, His Spirit works in us and through us in mighty ways brothers and sisters.
Because Our Souls Are at Stake, Lukewarmness is a spiritual disease. It dulls our sensitivity to sin, to God’s Word, and to the Holy Spirit. Jesus calls us to stay alert, to be watchful, and to remain in Him. If we drift into lukewarmness, we risk spiritual death. Paul the Apostle, author of the book of Hebrews warns, “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away” (Hebrews 2:1).
How Can We Avoid Lukewarm Christianity brothers and sisters?
Examine Our Hearts Regularly, We need to be honest with ourselves about our spiritual condition. Are we hot, cold, or lukewarm? Spend time in prayer, reading Scripture, and reflecting on your life. Ask God to show you areas where you've grown indifferent and to rekindle your passion for Him.
Repent and Renew Your Commitment – If you find yourself lukewarm, don’t just ignore it. Repent. Jesus tells the Laodiceans, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent” (Revelation 3:19). Repentance is the key to spiritual renewal. Ask God to forgive you and to help you return to your first love brothers and sisters.
Cultivate a Passionate Prayer Life, Prayer is the lifeline of a Christian. We need to be in constant communication with God. A lukewarm Christian prays when it’s convenient; a passionate Christian prays because they need God. Set aside regular time each day to pray and seek God’s presence.
Engage in Radical Obedience, Jesus calls us to follow Him with our whole lives. That means obeying Him in everything, even when it’s uncomfortable. Ask yourself: What areas of my life am I holding back from God? Strive to be obedient in all things, no matter the cost brothers and sisters.
Get Connected, one of the most important things we can do is stay connected to a church family that encourages us to grow in Christ. Accountability, fellowship, and discipleship help keep us from growing lukewarm. Find a group of believers who will challenge you to grow deeper in your faith.
My Conclusion today brothers and sisters is this:
Church, we cannot afford to be lukewarm. Jesus did not die for us to live indifferent, half-hearted lives. He calls us to be all in—passionate, sold-out, authentic followers of Him. Let us not be content with spiritual complacency, but instead, let us strive to live lives that reflect His glory.
As we close today, I want to challenge each of you to take a moment of reflection. Ask God to reveal any areas where you've become lukewarm. Repent, and ask Him to ignite a fire within you—one that burns with love for Him and for others.
Brothers and sisters let’s not just be Christians in name, but let’s be real Christians—hot, passionate, and fully surrendered to Jesus Christ.
May God bless each of you as you seek to live authentically for Him. Amen.
