The Power and Call of Forgiveness

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with open hearts this morning, eager for Your Word and thirsty for Your Spirit. Lord, we confess—sometimes we hold on to hurts longer than we should. Sometimes we want justice more than we want grace.

But You, Lord, are slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and quick to forgive.

Today, teach us to forgive as You forgive. Remove any root of bitterness in us, heal the wounds of our past, and let us walk in the freedom of Your mercy.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ we pray—Amen.

Brothers and sisters,

Let’s be honest—forgiveness is one of the hardest things God asks of us.

We love to receive forgiveness. We love to lift our hands and say, “Thank You, Jesus, for washing me clean.”

But when God says, “Now, go and forgive the one who betrayed you… the one who lied about you… the one who broke your trust…”—our hearts tighten.

Yet Jesus says something we cannot ignore.

Matthew 6:14–15

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

That’s not a “take it or leave it” teaching.

That’s a line in the sand.

Brothers and sisters,

We don’t set the standard for forgiveness—God does.

Psalm 103:12

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

When God forgives, He doesn’t keep our sins on file. He doesn’t pull out the record when we fail again. He removes them completely.

Ephesians 4:32 tells us:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

How much has God forgiven you? Every thought, every word, every deed that ever offended His holiness—wiped clean by the blood of Jesus.

There was once a king in a far country who kept a record of every debt owed to him. One day a servant came in owing an impossible amount—millions. The king forgave the debt entirely. But that same servant went and grabbed a fellow servant who owed him a few dollars and threw him in prison until he paid it. (Matthew 18:21–35)

That’s us when we refuse to forgive after God has erased our mountain of debt.

Forgiveness is not about letting them off the hook—it’s about letting you off the hook.

Hebrews 12:15

“See to it… that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”

Bitterness is like a weed—it grows, spreads, and destroys.

Corrie Ten Boom, who survived the Nazi concentration camps, once said:

“Forgiveness is setting the prisoner free… and finding out the prisoner was you.”

When you forgive, you cut the root. You breathe again. You sleep at night. You walk in peace.

Brothers and sisters,

The clearest picture of forgiveness is the cross.

Luke 23:34

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Jesus wasn’t forgiving petty slights—He was forgiving executioners as they killed Him.

Romans 12:19 reminds us:

“Do not take revenge… leave room for God’s wrath… ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

Forgiveness hands God the gavel and says, “I trust You with justice.”

I once heard about a man whose son was murdered. At trial, instead of screaming at the killer, he told him: “I forgive you. And when you get out of prison, I want you to come to my house. You have taken my son, but I will treat you like my own.” That man reflected the heart of Christ.

Colossians 3:13

“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

It doesn’t say, “Forgive when you feel ready.”

Forgiveness is an act of obedience before it’s an emotion.

Think of forgiveness like planting a seed. You may not see fruit immediately. But as you keep choosing to forgive, as you water it with prayer, healing begins to grow.

Remember God’s forgiveness toward you (Matthew 18:21–35).

Pray for those who hurt you (Matthew 5:44).

Bless them when possible (Romans 12:20).

Release it daily to God (1 Peter 5:7).

Trust God for justice (Romans 12:19).

Forgiveness doesn’t mean there are no boundaries. It doesn’t mean you put yourself back in harm’s way. But it does mean you refuse to let hate rule your heart.

Brothers and sisters,

Forgiveness is not just about them—it’s about you walking in the peace Jesus died to give you.

Think about that person whose name still makes you tense. That wound that still stings. They may never apologize, but your freedom is not tied to their apology—it’s tied to your obedience.

Come to the cross. Lay it down. Don’t carry it one more step.

Father,

Thank You for the forgiveness You poured out through Jesus Christ. Today we choose to obey You. We choose to forgive—not because they deserve it, but because You forgave us when we didn’t deserve it. Heal every wound. Pull out every root of bitterness. Let peace flood our hearts today. In Jesus’ name—Amen.
